LSU was formed over the 1974-1975 academic year from the merger of ULC (Union of Loughborough Colleges, from the merger of all four educational institutions: Loughborough College of Technology, Loughborough Training College, Loughborough College of Art, Loughborough College of Further Education) and LUTSU (Loughborough College of Technology Students Union). A new Union building was completed in 1978, before an extension was added in 1985.

In 1919, the Social Union and Sports Committee of Loughborough college combined to form Loughborough College Union (a staff/student body), which in the 1920s invested in 45-50 acres of land (the area between the Towers and the Union Building). By 1929, LCU had become the only ‘college’ member of the Universities Athletic Union. It operated parallel (and sometime sin cinjunctin with) to the SRC (Students Representative Council), till 1952, when Loughborough College splits into 4 separate institutions: Loughborough College of Technology (later LUT, now Loughborough University), Loughborough Training College (later Loughborough College of Education), Loughborough College of Art (later LCAD), and Loughborough College of Further Education (later Loughborough Technical College, now Loughborough College). This meant that by 1955, it was decided to amalgamate Loughborough College Union and the Students Representative Committee, to form the Union of Loughborough Colleges representing all 4 educational institutions (ULC).

Loughborough College Union (LCU) and the Students Representative Committee (SRC) amalgamated in 1955 to form the Union of Loughborough Colleges, representing all 4 educational institutions (ULC). However, in 1965, Loughborough College of Technology formed its own Students Union (LUTSU) as it would be obliged to do so by the charter granting it university status as Loughborough University of Technology (which happened in 1966). By then, ULC was representing Loughborough Training College (later Loughborough College of Education), Loughborough College of Art (later LCAD) and Loughborough College of Further Education (later Loughborough Technical College, now Loughborough College). By 1967, ULC was registered as a charity and by 1969, negotiations had started between LUTSU and ULC to build a joint social centre. The amalgamation between the two was completed in the academic year 1974-1975, and the new body took on the name of Loughborough Students Union (LSU).

In 1965, Loughborough College of Technology formed its own Students Union (LUTSU) as it would be obliged to do so by the charter granting it university status as Loughborough University of Technology (which happened in 1966), formally separating from the other colleges (Loughborough Training College (later Loughborough College of Education), Loughborough College of Art (later LCAD), Loughborough College of Further Education (later Loughborough Technical College, now Loughborough College)). LUTSU had been in effect operating within or as ULC due to the split of Loughborough College into four entities. However, in 1969, negotiations started between LUTSU and ULC to build a joint social centre. The amalgamation between the two was completed in the academic year 1974-1975, and the new body took on the name of Loughborough Students Union (LSU).
