Chemical Society of Loughborough University of Technology

Very few details are currently known, but fore the fact that members were mostly students on the Industrial Chemistry degree programme, which was essentially a pure chemistry course (Head of Department Dr R F Philips) with a few extras supplied by the separate, and larger, Department of Chemical Engineering. The Society arranged lectures from visiting scientists, and an annual dinner, and published a Journal, funded through local advertising. This sustained the cost of printing and other things, including printing summaries of the year's guest lectures, articles by present academic staff, and alumni news. John Thurman also edited the Journal during his time as president, during the academic year 1963-1964. Other active members of the Chemical Society were Barry Melsom, Paul Godwin and Bernard Scanlon. A faculty member, Dr J Barry Lee, was also much involved, particularly in helping to procure good quality guest lecturers.
